Game developer designer charged Capcom To use copyrighted images to build environments and even a logo Resident Evil 4.
Designer Judy A. Jurassic has filed a US lawsuit alleging that the developer used images from her book surfaces, a collection of 1200 tissue images photographed and published in 1996.
According to the artist, the book was created to serve as a visual reference for other architects, artists, and designers. In addition to the print edition, the folder came with a CD with photos. According to Juracek, it was necessary to license the images for commercial use.
According to Polygon, the designer identified about 80 images used in various ways and documented them over 100 pages. Among the highlights is the image of broken glass, which, according to it, is in the logo RE4:
Much of the evidence collected by Juracek was released publicly after the massive data leak from Capcom in November 2020, which Hacked game files, in addition to the personal information of the company’s employees.
When parsing the files, the designer also determined that some of the file names match the names of the images on the CD surfaces.
A Capcom representative told Polygon that they were “aware of the lawsuit” and had “no further comment” on the matter. The artist’s lawyer did not provide further details about the case.
