Instagram's algorithm uses several metrics to determine the order of users' stories:

    1. Interaction

Instagram monitors the people you interact with most often. If you frequently like, comment on, or direct message someone, it’s highly likely that their stories will appear first. This is the main factor that influences the system.

    2. Current Affairs

The newest stories are often displayed first, ensuring you see the freshest content on the platform.

    3. Time taken

The more time you spend watching someone's Stories, the more Instagram learns that this content is relevant to you.

    4. Content viewed on Facebook

Meta, the company that controls Instagram and WhatsApp, also owns Facebook. So the content you see and interact with on Facebook can directly impact the stories you see on Instagram.

    Who views your stories?

Many users like to see who views their stories. Sometimes the number of views may increase, but the top of the viewers list does not change.

This is because the display order is not chronological and may vary depending on the time of day you open the app.

According to an article from Mundo Conectado, Julian Gutman, Instagram's head of product, explains that this is done to create a “sense of novelty” in user interactions on the platform.

How to change the order of Instagram stories

So, knowing these details, if you want your closest people to appear at the top of the Stories tab, it is advisable to interact with them more, whether through likes, messages or watching stories.

If you do this, these people will also see your stories frequently on the platform.

Additionally, if they add you to their “Best Friends,” you'll also see their content at the top of the screen when you open Instagram.
