Instagram's new feature allows users to publicly comment on followers' stories. Called “Hype”, the user has the option to post an open comment on the story and Any follower can see the posted interaction.

The open commenter's profile picture appears at the bottom of the story. By clicking, you can see who the person is and what they posted. This feature is similar to comments on photos published on a social network, and is open to the public.

Users who already have the feature receive a warning when posting a story, indicating that comments may be posted on the post: “Add comments to your friends' stories. Comments are visible to anyone viewing the story” (see below).

The profile owner is the one who can choose whether or not to activate the feature, as well as whether to generally delete messages left in Stories. You can also block users and adjust settings so that only followers can leave a reaction. In addition to seeing public comments, anyone can also interact with them.

There is a difference when sending a public and private message in this new feature. When you post on Hype publicly on Instagram, the message that appears is “Type a comment,” which appears when the text option appears. When you send a DM or DM, the word “Write Message” appears.

It is important to be careful not to get confused and to post a message that may be private to all Instagram users. The comment will be available to all users as long as the story exists – 24 hours if the post owner does not delete it sooner.

This feature was announced in 2023 and was in the testing phase by Meta. During the announcement, Instagram President Adam Mosseri said that Meta had observed a change in behavior among users of the social network in 2022, who were sending private messages in stories more than publishing in followers’ posts. With Hype, the company's idea is to create engagement and encourage original content creation.
