British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that the UK will allow up to 10,000 fans to watch football matches in stadiums from 17 May.

With this measure, it would be possible to have fans in the final round of the English Premier League, but the semi-finals and the FA Cup Final would be played at Wembley with closed gates.

According to Johnson’s roadmap, which sets a goal to lift all restrictions on June 21, large capacity stadiums, such as Wembley, can hold a maximum of 10,000 people from May 17.

That would be a welcome boost ahead of the European Championships, scheduled for June, as there are seven matches in the tournament scheduled in London – three in the group stage, one in the quarter-finals, two matches in the semi-finals and a final.

For indoor events, the maximum capacity will be 1000 spectators, while stadiums that do not match the specifications of large venues will be allowed to receive 4 thousand spectators.

Another event that will be affected by the new measures is the Wimbledon tennis tournament, which opens its doors on June 28, seven days after entering normal life in the UK and has been working for some time with the possibility of holding it with a reduced capacity.

All measures Johnson announced are subject to advances in virus control and vaccination in the country, where there are already more than 17 million people who have received the first dose.
