UK retail sales volume fell by 0.9% in September, after a 0.4% increase recorded in August, according to data published on Friday (20) by the Office for National Statistics, the country’s statistics body. In the quarter ending in September, sales fell 0.8% compared to the previous three months. In the annual comparison, the decrease amounted to 1.0%.

Non-food store sales volume fell 1.9% during the month, as retailers cited continued cost-of-living pressures in the country, coupled with unseasonably warm weather, leading to a decline in fall clothing sales. Clothing store sales volume decreased by 1.6%.

Sales volumes of so-called non-store retail (mostly online retailers) fell by 2.2% in September 2023, accelerating from a 0.9% decline in August.
