The endemic snail, which walks 9 meters during its life, lives in Portugal. He began to understand

“He exists only in Arrabida, and during his life, He only walks about 9 metresRastero said.

The snails live on the largest limestone cliff on the European coast – more than 380 meters high, with a path taken by a plant known as carrasco da arrabida. It is difficult and rough, and it bothers those who make their way to the top.

Francisco heads the Center for Speleology in Costa Azul. He says he lived on top of the giant cliff for seven months.

“I did things I never imagined I would do, you know, built a tree house myself. (…) He hunted wild boar, and he had a vegetable garden.”

Life in the natural park seems protected, but Francisco has already noticed the effects of climate change: “It rains very little, in the past it rained 700 mm a year, now it rains about 150 or 200 mm.”

As the Arabida dries up, the number of insects decreases – changing the natural balance.

In addition, quarrying is a concern. They are advancing across the park’s borders, driven by the “boom” in Portugal’s real estate construction sector. For example, once a fishing village, Sesimbra has doubled in size in recent decades.
