FifthSeveral unions went on strike to protest the French Parliament’s recent approval of a draft law requiring air traffic controllers to individually announce whether they are on strike or not, 48 hours in advance.
France’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation last week asked airlines to abandon 20% to 25% of their flight schedules in Paris Orly, Toulouse-Blagnac, Bordeaux-Mérignac and Marseille-Provence.
Given France’s geographical location, the days of strike carried out by French air traffic controllers since the beginning of the year have forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights over the European Union from Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland and the United Kingdom. While France uses minimum service laws to protect French flights, Ryanair accused in a statement.
Ryanair added: “This is unfair. France (and all other EU countries) must protect flights during air traffic controller strikes, as is the case in Spain, Italy and Greece, and cancel flights to and from the affected country.”
