It’s impossible to relive the golden age of the Internet without mentioning the iconic Windows XP wallpaper and its iconic green hillside views. The virtual background of one of the most widely used operating systems in the world not only remains fresh in the memories of many Internet users from the 90s and 2000s, but also sometimes raises real questions: after all, what is the view of Hill 28? After years?

In case you don’t know, the famous wallpaper is a real picture of a landscape in the state of California in the United States. The author is photographer Charles Aurier, current correspondent for National Geographic magazine, who took the iconic photo in 1996. The photo was acquired by Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and became the default wallpaper on computers running the Windows XP operating systems.

The image of a green hill under a blue sky led the computer age for many years, leading some people to search for the exact spot where the recording was made by O’Rear. During one of these searches, a creator found the place and took a new comparison photo, highlighting the dramatic change that has occurred in the last 28 years.
The hill was used to grow vines, but was attacked a year before the photo was taken. It was later used for agriculture until the vineyards returned in 2010. The landscape we knew for many years no longer exists (see photo below).
