247 – After delivering the opening address at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continued his agenda of bilateral meetings, holding important meetings with world leaders.
Meeting with the Austrian President – On Tuesday afternoon (19), the Brazilian President met with the President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen. During the conversation, the Austrian President praised Lula’s speech at the United Nations, which stressed the importance of global unity against inequality, hunger and climate change. The two leaders discussed environmental issues, including expectations surrounding the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held in Belem in 2025, as well as the energy transition and the search for clean energy sources. Lula stressed Brazil’s commitment to starting “green industrialization”, with low carbon emissions, and taking advantage of the country’s clean energy matrix.
Furthermore, the talk touched on the Global Biofuels Alliance, launched during the G20 summit in New Delhi, in which Brazil plays an important role due to its expertise in sustainable biofuel production. Lula also pointed to a joint project with US President Joe Biden, focusing on decent work, that will be launched on 9/20.
The Brazilian President also took the opportunity to discuss strengthening trade relations and investments between Brazil and Austria, and invited President Van der Bellen to visit Brazil on a trade mission.

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Austria date back to the beginning of the 19th century, and have strengthened over time, culminating in numerous bilateral agreements in areas such as economics, education, science and technology. In 2022, the trade volume between the two countries reached about 1.5 billion US dollars.
Meeting with the German Chancellor – In addition to his meeting with the President of Austria, Lula also met with German Chancellor Olaf Schulz. In a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Brazilian president reported that one of the topics discussed was the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.
Regarding this topic, Lula said: “I consider it important to conclude this year regarding the current global situation.” Moreover, Brazil’s CEO announced that he will visit Germany in December this year: “We will have two days of work between our governments to deepen cooperation, relations and investments between our two countries.”
