The fifth installment in the Jurassic Park series is said to have cost more than $500 million. On Netflix, you can now see if the influence investment has paid off.

As the fifth installment in the series, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had to find new paths among the tracks that had done so well in 2018. Those tracks were fiery on one hand and scary on the other. Because the dinosaur blockbuster tells a disaster drama in the first half and turns into a horror movie in the second. Despite the large budget, unusual means were used for effects. Find out what it’s like right now on Netflix (if you have a subscription).

Over $500 million and a pile of cat litter were used in the dinosaur show

fallen kingdom Continues the story of Jurassic World (2015) – which in turn revived the Jurassic Park series – starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Three years after the events of the last film, the Islar Nublar dinosaurs are threatened by a volcanic eruption. Claire (Howard) and Owen (Pratt) launch a dangerous rescue operation.

The volcano, which actually originated in Michael Crichton’s first novel, is already erupting. But to represent the fiery menace, the film crew didn’t just resort to computer effects.

In one scene in the first half of the movie, Claire is threatened by a dinosaur and an incoming block of lava. CGI was used in the final version of Lava. To create the most realistic lighting effects possible, the cat litter was also set on fire. In an interview with The Thrillist, visual effects supervisor David Vickery explained the usage as follows:

“We had a crack in the ceiling that was filled with cat poop soaked in some sort of flammable liquid. There were 12 different nozzles that could throw cat poop in different places, which gave us these huge, beautiful streams of liquid fire falling from the ceiling. The ceiling. It also gave us lighting. Great interactivity and a very interesting smoky atmosphere.”

You can catch a glimpse of the cat litter scene in Jurassic World 2 in this official image:

According to Universal studio tax returns, a total of $516 million was invested in the sequel (via Forbes). Unfortunately, we don’t know how much of that amount was invested in cat litter.

Is a sci-fi adventure worth it on Netflix?

in fallen kingdomHowever, some problematic story choices that either bring the series closer to science fiction or make little sense are made in the course of character development. However, regardless, director Juan Antonio Bayona proves to be the only man to deliver elaborate moments of spectacle and, once again, portray dinosaurs as menace.

In addition to Indiana Jones and Star Wars, Harrison Ford could have starred in another famous epic – but he refused the director’s invitation

In fact, the highlight of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom It’s not the volcanic eruption, but the bad little horror movie hidden in the second half. Here, a so-called Indoraptor follows in the footsteps of the great slasher-type villains and terrorizes the villagers.

Even the nimble dinosaur killer couldn’t hide one of the movie’s main weaknesses: the human team around Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard remain as uninteresting as ever. Thus Jurassic World 2 is another recommendation for dinosaur fans and anyone looking to end their night with a little excitement.
