A declaration signed by 51 signatories to the United Nations, including the United States, South Korea, Japan and European countries such as Italy, condemned the North Korean regime’s human rights abuses.
The text says: “The abuses and abuses have been well documented by reliable sources and include arbitrary executions, harsh and dangerous prison conditions, punishment of family members for crimes committed by an individual, and the state’s total control of expression through censorship and repression.” Released this Thursday (17).
In the declaration read by the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, the current president of the Security Council, the countries said that “violations require the Council’s attention, and even contribute to facilitating the spread of illegal weapons destruction and the advancement of ballistic missiles.”
“The Pyongyang government engages in forced labor both domestically and abroad to generate the profits that keep its artillery advancing. The repressive political climate allows the country to direct resources towards weapons development, regardless of the well-being of the population, who suffer without economic conditions and victim of malnutrition,” they say.
The text concludes by saying that “none of this is acceptable”: “There is a lack of accountability for human rights violations. The UN Security Council needs to hold the North Korean government to account.” .
