Both Hamilton and Vinicius Jr. have been champions in the fight against racism issues
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has made a comment about Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior, who was recently subjected to a racist episode, at a press conference in Monaco. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has recalled the injuries he suffered during his career.
“It’s devastating to think that in 2023 we’re still seeing and hearing this stuff. It really hits me, it evokes emotions about the things I went through, whether it was in the UK or when I was racing in Italy or France or Spain. I think it was brave. Unbelievably “.
The only black driver in the class, Hamilton experienced an unfortunate episode during pre-season testing for the class at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmelo. In the episode, a group of fans attacked him with racial slurs in the stands. At the time, he was playing for McLaren.
“I think it’s amazing what so many of those who suffer (racism) are doing on the field in terms of staying strong, staying strong, staying humble in their approach. They don’t react reflexively but take responsibility when they step forward because they know there are a lot of young kids watching. “.
In the world of sport, he has also been the victim of racial abuse from former driver Nelson Piquet, a three-time F1 champion. The Brazilian was ordered to pay R$5 million to fund the promotion of racial equality and against discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community.
