Starfield: Phil Spencer wants the best match possible, not 11/10

Starfield doesn’t have to be an 11/10 game, but it does have to be the best Starfield possible. This was said by Phil Spencer in an interview with The Guardian, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, in response to the comments received about expectations about the game, that is, not expecting people to sell PS5 to buy Xbox or something like that.

The desire to have the best Starfield possible is probably why the game’s launch has been pushed back from November 2022 to September 6, 2023 (on PC and Xbox Series X/S).

The point here is that Phil Spencer said that a game can be great no matter what, but Playstation has already had its base since the PS4 with players who have bought digital games. Many people have said that Spencer does not want to make quality games because of this. However, he is here to explain it further and avoid other interpretations.

Spencer: “The part I didn’t like about what you said was that quality games are essential to our strategy. So it’s not about Starfield getting an 11 out of 10 rating, even though that’s a silly way to go.” I’ll use the review results as a measure of game quality. But our ultimate goal is to make the best Starfield possible. I want to make the best games possible.”

In short, Spencer believes the ratings don’t reflect the quality of the game, despite saying 11/10 for Starfield. Still, it’s a big gamble from Bethesda that has been appropriate for decades on titles like Skyrim and Fallout. After all, we’re talking about the biggest game Bethesda has ever made, which promises to be a unique, immersive, and absolutely massive experience. However, it’s worth noting that the Starfield show alone seems to have really boosted Xbox Series X/S sales.
