The number of foreigners wanting to live in Brazil increased in 2022
In 2022, asylum applications from migrants to Brazil increased by 70% compared to the previous year.
- In 2013, there were a little less than that 7 thousand requests;
- The number peaked in 2019, with more than 82 thousand applications;
- And last year witnessed an increase of 73% compared to 2021 by more than 50 thousand requests.
In the 10-year period, there were 345,000 asylum applications.

As demand has increased, so has the number of lawsuits awaiting analysis by the Brazilian government.
One of the main reasons for this queue was the growth of Venezuelans who sought asylum from the Brazilian government.
Over a five-year period, asylum applications from Venezuelans accounted for nearly 70% of the total application.
The government structure is insufficient
International relations professor Carolina Claro notes that the structure of the federal government is insufficient to meet demand. There are currently about 40 employees of the National Refugee Committee, which is linked to the Ministry of Justice, and is responsible for analyzing applications.
“We need public policies that are made from the point of view of the federal government, both the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Human Rights, and it is necessary that we support these people, so that these people are actually documented as refugees in the country and we have all the protections of the law. We need public policies to include these people,” reports Carolina Claro.
What does the Ministry of Justice say?
The Justice Department claims that humanitarian conflicts and economic crises have led to a global demand for asylum.
The ministry says it set up a task force this year to assess the applications, and that by May it had completed analysis of 80,000 applications – nearly double the number analyzed in all of last year.
According to the ministry, there are still about 60,000 applications awaiting a decision.
