Speak English in Italy Or the use of other foreign words in official documents and correspondence, if it depends on the government of Giorgia Meloni, can lead to a fine. Fines can range from €5,000 to €100,000.

The measure is a legislative proposal put forward by Fabio Rampelli, a parliamentarian who is supported by the prime minister’s government. Thus, with strong resistance from the population and the intelligentsia, justification is presented as a means of defending the Italian language.

    Fighting “Anglomania”

On social networks, Fabio Rampelli defends the struggle against what he calls “Englishmania”, that is, the excessive use of English words by professionals in the Italian government, such as politicians and civil servants. Moreover, he proposes to fine those who disobey the law.

Like other countries, Italy also suffers from the influence of English on its language. For example, terms such as social media, enclosure, frame, stakeholders, among others, are also found in everyday Italian life.

However, if on the one hand there are people who advocate the use of language in a flexible way, as something in constant development, on the other hand there are those who advocate the “protection” of the national language. In this latter group is the party of Giorgia Meloni.

In addition to government institutions, the proposed law also bans the use of loanwords in universities and schools across Italy. Therefore, with the exception of courses for foreign students and Italian language courses with skills in other languages, teachers must teach all classes in Italian.

The party, which considers itself far-right, promotes the defense of conservative nationalist ideals, such as protecting language and limiting foreign influences.
