The plan includes strengthening the corporate governance of sports organizations and creating greater accountability and transparency in their financial activities. In addition, it provides an investment fund for smaller teams to develop their infrastructure and compete equally with larger teams.

“We know there are real challenges that threaten the stability of clubs big and small. These new plans will protect football for future generations,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

Another important aspect of the plan is to protect the rights of fans. The new model recommends introducing regulations that ensure fans have a voice in team decisions and actively participate in team governance and management.

The British government’s move to regulate English football has been welcomed by the Football Association of England (FA) and the English Football League (EFL), which represents the country’s 72 professional clubs. However, the Premier League commented that its teams would carefully review the proposal submitted.

The Premier League, on the other hand, acknowledged the need for “change in the governance of football” but insisted it was working to implement independent regulation. The league also expressed concern about the potential effects on the sport’s ability to attract investment, as major corporations do not want to invest in overly bureaucratic spectacles.
