The design of the PlayStation 5’s cooling system was one of the most interesting topics when it was revealed, mainly due to the fact that Sony is using Liquid Metal between the APU and the console’s heatsink.
Since the PS5 is a few years old, the first indications are starting to emerge that although Liquid Metal far outperforms in terms of thermal conductivity compared to more traditional thermal paste, it also has problems that may arise in the long run.
One such issue, which even Sony is aware of, is that they have placed around it a substance that is supposed to absorb any liquid metal spills, but apparently it is not 100% effective.
Well known YouTuber, TheCod3rDue to his dedication to repairing Sony consoles, both PlayStation 4 and now PlayStation 5, having passed through his hands hundreds of PS5 consoles, he found that some units show an issue with Liquid Metal, in which the console when used vertically, suffers from the effect of gravity It drops to the point of contact with vital elements, thus entering into a short circuit.
It warns of an issue Sony will have to consider if it redesigns the PS5, whether with the Slim or PS5 Pro model. It is also mentioned that the problem may never appear on all consoles, but some will definitely experience this problem.
As a precaution, it’s best not to use the PlayStation 5 vertically, or hope bad luck doesn’t knock on our door.
