The British Energy Authority said the UK faces “significant risks” of gas shortages this winter (in the northern hemisphere) and potential emergencies due to the conflict in Ukraine and limited supplies in Europe.
Although Russia only meets about 4% of Britain’s gas needs, turmoil in Europe has contributed to higher UK prices and made it more difficult for the UK to obtain gas from other countries.
In a letter to energy company SSE, regulator Ofgem said the UK faced the potential for a “gas supply emergency”, in which supplies to some power stations are reduced, which could prevent them from generating electricity.
Responding to the publication of the letter, Ofgem said in an email: “This winter is likely to be more difficult than the previous due to Russia’s disruption of gas supplies to Europe.”
“We need to be prepared for all scenarios,” Ofgem said, adding that he was taking emergency measures to ensure the UK’s energy system was fully prepared.
Gas-fired power stations accounted for more than 40% of UK electricity production last year, while fossil fuels are also used to heat around 80% of British homes.
