    Understand what Google Play Protect is

    Google Play Protect is a free service designed to keep your private data and apps safe. Its performance is similar to that of an antivirus: it automatically scans the Play Store app before downloading, and checks for malware that could compromise the security and performance of your devices. In addition, the new feature also performs periodic checks to detect external threats such as malicious third-party URLs.

The new feature sends privacy alerts about which apps can get permissions to access your personal information.

    How is Google Play Protect activated?

    Play Protect should be automatically enabled on any Android device that came with the Play Store installed in factory settings. If this is not the case for you or if you want to make sure this feature is activated, just follow the steps below:

    • Open the Play Store app and click on your profile icon;
    • Go to Play Protect and click on the gear in the upper right corner of the screen;
    • Make sure “Scan apps with Play Protection” and “Improve malicious app detection” are enabled. If not, just swipe to the right.
