Birmingham will host the 2026 European Championships in Athletics.

Budapest was a rival, but withdrew, leaving the second city free as host.

It comes after Birmingham successfully held the Commonwealth Games in the summer, and it will be the first time the UK will host the European Championships in Athletics.

Jack Buckner, chief executive of UKA, said: “We are delighted and honored to have been awarded the privilege of hosting the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

“This is great news for athletics and it benefits the entire UK by demonstrating our ability to host major events across the country.

“UKA has always wanted to host this event and we thank European Athletics for their confidence in entrusting us with their most important competition.

“Our vision for the tournament is around record ticket sales and a great atmosphere for athletes to inspire athletes on and off the field.

“We promise to deliver an amazing, innovative and revolutionary tournament, and we are excited that we can now put this plan into action.”
