Edwards, 31, knocked out Camaro Usman with a head kick in the last minute of a five-round welterweight fight, knocking out one of the fighters considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound in the UFC.
In doing so, the Jamaican-born Briton avenged his 2015 decision loss to Usman and extended his winning streak to 10 fights over seven years – since that loss to the Nigerian-American.
Asked if he should win the BBC Sports Personality Award, Rocky told reporters on Friday: “One hundred percent. Who did you do in the UK this year?”
“It’s one in a million – from Birmingham, playing it in the UK, in one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and inspiring generations and young adults in other academies.
“I think I should win 100%, or at least be nominated anyway!”
England’s women’s soccer player Beth Meade is the favorite to win the award, having won the Golden Boot at the European Championships this summer when the lionesses won their first major title.
Mixed martial arts has never been to the BBC’s year-end sports awards show, although former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was named the ‘World Sports Star’ in 2020.
The Russian retained the lightweight belt and remained undefeated 29-0 by submitting to Justin Gaetje in October, before retiring from the ring at the age of 32.
