In a statement, Biden called on Congress to keep current resources in place to purchase vaccines, treatment against the disease and tests to detect the virus. He also urged Americans to remain “vigilant”.

“We must remain vigilant against this pandemic and do everything in our power to save as many lives as possible, as we have done with more tests, vaccines and treatments than ever before. It is critical that Congress conserve these resources,” he urged.

Biden also lamented the deaths and said the United States, which has the world record for Covid-19 cases and deaths from the disease, will never be the same country after the pandemic.

“Today, we have reached a tragic point: a million Americans have lost lives because of Covid-19. A million empty chairs around the dining table. Each one is an irreparable loss. Each one leaves behind a family, a community, and a nation that has been forever changed by this pandemic. Generation (His wife Biden) and I will pray for both of them.”

Worldwide, more than 6.2 million people have lost their lives to the disease., according to Johns Hopkins University, which has been monitoring cases in real time since the start of the pandemic. However, the World Health Organization said, last week, that the official number is outdated, and the total number of deaths may reach nearly 15 million.
