In India, a 65-year-old man has already received at least 8 doses of vaccines against COVID-19, according to local authorities. According to the retired postman, he would have received, in total, 11 vaccination applications between February and December of last year. The case was discovered when he tried to receive the twelfth dose last week.

The elderly man has been identified as Brahmdeo Mandal and lives with his family in Madhepura district in the Indian state of Bihar. The search for multiple doses of the Covid-19 vaccine has begun because the doses, according to the retiree, relieve chronic pain and help him “stay healthy.”

“After the injection, my body aches were gone. I had pain in my knee and was walking with a stick. Not now. I feel fine,” he said, according to the BBC.

Investigations into the applications of the Covid vaccine in the elderly

An investigation is currently underway to see how a single individual could have taken multiple doses of the Covid-19 vaccine without catching the attention of the Indian healthcare system.

So far, “we found evidence that he received eight doses in four places.” [diferentes]Amarendra Pratap Shahi, a doctor from Madhipura district, explained.

Interestingly, the old man was able to take “two doses at half an hour apart” on the same day. Most intriguingly, the two apps are registered on the local COVID-19 vaccination control portal.

“We are at a loss as to how this could happen. It appears that there is a malfunction in the gate. We are also trying to find out if there has been any negligence on the part of the people working in the vaccination centres,” Shahi said.

For public health expert Chandrakant Lahariya, the “only way” for that would happen is if vaccination data from websites were uploaded to the portal after a long delay, allowing stories like that of a retired postman to happen.

It should be noted that, to date, there are no studies on the risks of high-dose vaccines against COVID-19 in such a short period of time. Thus, the level of immunization of an individual cannot be determined.
