The scientist Charles Lieber can be indicted
Scientist Charles Lieber faces up to 26 years in prison for lying

In late 2021, a court indicted one of the country’s leading scientists in the field of nanoscience for lying about academic and financial ties with China.

Charles Lieber faces up to 26 years in prison on six counts. Two from lying to the government and four from tax evasion. No date has been set for the verdict.

Concern about the theft of industrial secrets and the Chinese government’s efforts to recruit spies is not new. Since 2018, when President Donald Trump was president, this big fear has already been around. Thus, Trump carried out a kind of scavenger hunt to force academics collecting research money from the federal government to reveal their connections to Chinese institutions.

This Lieber World case was seen as a test of the strength of the Justice Department’s more than 2,000 charges, reporting a climate of racial discrimination and intimidation against the Attorney General, Merrick Garland.

There was no racist motive in the investigations, former Attorney General Andrew Lelling told Folha de São Paulo, “Many academics did not previously understand the need for transparency. We are strengthening this point.”

Lilling also believes that the bill will still be subject to changes under Democrat Joe Biden’s government, but he also notes that Trump was the first president to take appropriate action in this area, and that Biden has been on equal, if not more, aggressive.
