Huge fire engulfs 15-storey building in Milan
On Sunday (29) a massive fire broke out in a 15-storey building in Via Antonini, in the southern suburbs of Milan, Italy, affecting practically the entire structure.
Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, said there was no information yet on casualties or injuries, but that there were several ambulances and firefighters in the area. Preliminary information indicates that about 70 families live in the building.
“About 20 people left without any problems. Now the firefighters are coming from house to house, breaking down doors to see if anyone is inside. We’re sure there was time to leave, but until confirmation arrives, we can’t be sure,” Sala said. .
Dozens of ambulances and firetrucks are on site to assist people who have already been evacuated from the building.
Currently, there are hundreds of people on the streets, including residents who have managed to save themselves. There is still no information on the victims.
“We smelled smoke and ran away immediately. I didn’t think it was that serious,” a resident of the building, who escaped from the 15th floor, told ANSA. “The fire department told me he was going out to the other side of my land, where a boy who had to be rescued lives.”
The structure, known as Torre Moro, caught fire shortly after 5:30 pm (local time). A long plume of smoke can be seen for miles around the Famagusta region.
According to reports, it is possible that the fire spread from the upper floor, tearing down the windows and reaching other apartments. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
The entire facade of the building was destroyed by fire as a result of some explosions in the apartments. Nearby establishments, Penny’s supermarket, shoe store and McDonald’s cafeteria have not been affected yet.
