Uruguay recorded no deaths due to Covid-19 on Saturday, which has not happened since December 2020, amid the slowdown in the epidemic in the country due to the high rate of vaccination.
The National Emergency System (Sinai), a government agency that records cases of the epidemic, announced on Saturday afternoon, that “today, no deaths from SARS-CoV-2 have been diagnosed in our country.” There were 83 new infections after more than 4,000 daily cases at the end of May.
Five months after the vaccination campaign began, 73% of the country’s population of 3.5 million had been vaccinated with at least one dose, while 64% had received the full diet. Health authorities have even approved a booster dose of a Pfizer vaccination device for those who have already received two injections of CoronaVac, from the Chinese laboratory Sinovac.
Excellent immunization rates are accompanied by the sharp decline in the number of cases, deaths and hospitalizations in intensive care that has been observed since June. The country had 1,619 active cases on Saturday, a sharp drop from the peak at the end of May, when 37,000 people were hospitalized with the disease.
After staying for several weeks as a country with more daily deaths than its population, with 79 deaths recorded on April 15, the average has been three deaths a day in the past seven days. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 5,986 deaths from Covid and 382,360 cases of the disease.
