The UK Mint issued the first British coins to bear the effigy of King Charles. Portrait of the new king Facing the opposite direction of his dead motherQueen Elizabeth II, Following the tradition of the country🇧🇷

The new image will appear on the 50 pence (£1.96) coin, which will go into circulation in the coming months, and the £5 commemorative coin, which will feature two new portraits of Elizabeth on the reverse.

Since the reign of Charles II in the 17th century, according to the royal family’s website, the monarch has generally appeared on coins in the opposite position to his predecessor.

Charles personally approved the official portrait by British sculptor Martin Jennings. The image is surrounded by a Latin inscription that reads “King Charles III, by the grace of God, Defender of the Faith”.

“The portrait was carved from a photograph of the monarch and was inspired by the iconic figures that have adorned Britain’s coins over the centuries,” said Jennings.

“It’s the smallest work I’ve ever made, but it’s exciting to know that it will be seen and held by people around the world for centuries to come.”

Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, aged 96, after 70 years on the throne. Around 27 billion coins bearing his image are in circulation and will be phased out of the UK economy.
