The doctor explains that this happens because the disease causes the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and substances such as interleukin 6, which are compounds that cause the body's cells to destroy themselves. This can happen in the early stages, but is more common in the advanced stages.

When should weight loss be a concern?

Healthy weight loss involves intending to lose weight, or changing habits, such as increasing physical activity and reducing calorie intake. It is considered a matter of concern when there is a loss of 4.5 kg, or 5% of body weight, between six and 12 months, for no apparent reason.

“Weight loss, as well as the appearance of any new and persistent symptoms, such as cough, pain, vaginal or rectal bleeding, unusual fatigue, headache, and epigastric pain (pain in the pit of the stomach), should be a reason for warning,” explains the doctor.

She stresses that attention should be greater if a person has any risk factors for cancer, such as smoking, obesity, family history of cancer, exposure to toxic substances, and HPV (human papillomavirus).
It is worth noting that there are many conditions that can lead to weight loss and only a doctor can evaluate the reasons. This is the state of changes that promote so-called catabolic or inflammatory stress and increased energy expenditure, such as some lung diseases, hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel diseases, infectious and parasitic diseases, diabetes, and depression.
