Nadhim Zahawi, a former British minister and current leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, said this Saturday that the country’s tax authority had concluded that the mistakes made at the financial level in his personal finances were not intentional, but careless. The politician made the clarification after it was reported that he paid the British tax authorities several million pounds last December.

Nadim Zahavi explained in the quoted report GuardianThe breach in question concerned the polling firm he helped found, YouGov.

“21 years ago, I co-founded a company called Ugov. When we started, I didn’t have the money or the experience to go it alone. So I asked my father for help. In the process, he received a stake in the business as a founder in exchange for some capital and his valuable guidance,” says the politician.

“Twenty-one years later, when I was appointed Finance Minister [do Reino Unido], questions were raised about my tax status. I discussed them with the Ministerial Committee at the time”, the same reports said, following a conversation with the British tax authorities, it was concluded that the father was indeed entitled to the said shares. However, the tax authority does not agree with the “correct allocation”.

“They concluded that it was a ‘reckless, but deliberate’ error”, defends this Saturday’s leader. The Tories, guarantees that he has already paid the amount due to the tax authorities. However, it did not reveal the sum in question, although the press suggested it would have been several million pounds.

Boris Johnson’s former minister, Nadim Zahavi currently holds the posts of Conservative Party leader and Secretary of State without portfolio, allowing Rishi Sunak to join the Cabinet of Ministers.
