The United Kingdom and Canada, Saturday (21) in London, closed a transitional trade agreement to protect the flow of $ 27 billion in goods and services between them after Britain’s exit from the European Union, and promised to start negotiations on a specific agreement next year.

As the UK prepares to end its transition from the European Union on December 31, the UK has been negotiating several bilateral agreements to maintain trade, with many simply replacing terms the bloc has already agreed to.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson participated in an online chat with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his trade ministers to highlight the deal, which paves the way for a specific deal covering more areas such as digital commerce, small business, the media environment and the women’s economy. Empowerment.

“Today’s deal supports £20 billion in trade and creates thousands of jobs,” Liz Truss, the UK’s international trade secretary, said in a statement.

The Canadian government said the transition agreement “largely repeats” the EU’s agreement on lowering tariffs, labor and environmental clauses. “We want a high-level, ambitious and comprehensive trade agreement with the UK,” he said, noting that Canada wanted terms similar to the EU agreement.

    International Partners

The United Kingdom is Canada’s fifth largest trading partner after the United States, China, Mexico and Japan.

Boris Johnson is trying to shape a new “global UK” that can go it alone and negotiate better trade deals from the European Union as part of what he says are the benefits of the historic decision to leave the world’s largest trading bloc.

In less than two years, the country has concluded trade agreements with 53 countries, representing 164 billion pounds ($217.82 billion) of British bilateral trade. Johnson’s critics point out that many of them are essentially the same as the EU agreements.

The Business Continuity Agreement between the UK and Canada will be subject to final legal examinations before it is formally signed. “This is a good time,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
