Consul General of the United Kingdom, Melanie Hopkins, is coming to Salvador to start a partnership between the British government and the municipal government in the field of education. It is a Skills for Prosperity project led by the UK Embassy and a collaboration agreement between the City’s Department of Education and the British Council, which seeks to implement activities for the continuous professional development of teachers, teacher trainers and other professionals. The Global Skills for Prosperity Program promotes access to education and skills development opportunities for youth and disadvantaged groups. These are efforts to democratize English learning that have already benefited more than 2.5 million students and more than 20,000 teachers in all regions of Brazil through a variety of teaching materials and an English language training platform for educators.
In Salvador, 100,000 elementary school students and more than 9,000 teachers from the municipal public school system are expected to benefit from the program.
“Partnerships like this are one of the core tasks of diplomacy: bringing countries together to promote social justice and equal opportunities,” Melanie told us. The visit is scheduled for Thursday, November 10. Hopkins will come with a new honor. Milton Deiro Neto, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Bahia, was sworn in in August.
