Although researchers are still studying the exact mechanisms by which these products affect the body, the relationship between their consumption and the development of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and obesity, has already been proven. The relationship between these foods and an increased risk of various types of cancer has also been the subject of study for years.

However, reversing this situation is no simple task. We understand that it is easier to cut out processed foods than to prepare meals with fresh ingredients. Moreover, the prices of these products and the difficulty of accessing an affordable, diverse diet pose significant obstacles for the entire population.

In this sense, the recent proposal to review the composition of the basic food basket, in line with the guidelines of the dietary guides for the Brazilian population, is a positive one. The idea is to prioritize fresh foods, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. However, the challenge is to develop pricing strategies that make this basket accessible to all Brazilians.

This will be just one of the policies that could be effective in changing the approach to chronic disease prevention in the country. In addition to providing solutions, it is necessary to create opportunities so that residents can also play an active role in taking care of their health.

This is not only in terms of diet, but with regular physical activity, vaccination and attention to mental health.

It is not enough to just talk about risk factors; It is necessary to address the conditions in which the majority of Brazilians live. Education plays an important role in this process, and we must create the conditions that make the adoption of healthy habits possible effectively.
