Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) was set to make history by becoming the first space company to launch a vertical rocket into orbit from UK soil. The nine engines were scheduled to be tested as part of the launch, but one of them exploded before the countdown.

The company's statement said the incident, which occurred at Saxford Spaceport on Unst Island in Shetland (coast of Scotland), did not result in any injuries and the launch pad itself was not damaged. The explosion caused a fire in the building, as flames and smoke plumes emanated from the lower base of the missile and the building caught fire.

the The company had conducted another successful test three months ago, running the engines for eight seconds before shutting them down.He explained that the explosion was caused by a malfunction in the first stage of the missile, which led to its loss.

the RFA said it is working with the SaxaVord spaceport and relevant authorities to gather data and information to ultimately resolve what happened. The company also highlights that its development philosophy emphasizes real testing, while recognizing the high risks associated with this approach. It indicates that it intends to return to regulatory operations as soon as possible.

the BBC Saxford Spaceport is expected to receive CAA approval in December 2023 to conduct orbital launches during that year. It was also the first in Western Europe to be licensed for vertical launch into orbit.

Up to 30 launches are expected annually, ranging from satellites or payloads into space.by companies such as Lockheed Martin/ABL Space Systems, Germany's HyImpulse, and Skyrora.

The UK has another licensed spaceport, Cornwall Spaceport, but it only launches rockets horizontally using aircraft. Here, Virgin Orbit attempted to launch its LauncherOne rocket last year, but an anomaly prevented it from reaching its planned orbit.
