Political scientist Matthews Marlison, a native of Nova Friburgo, in the Serrana region of Rio, has lived in New York for a year and was working on the house when he noticed that the sky was turning yellow on Tuesday (6).

He says he thought it was just an unusual afternoon. Matthews left to go to the Museum of Natural History and noticed that the sky was very orange.

“I didn’t think it would be anything to worry about yet,” he says, “until I read the news and realized it might be a direct result of the fires in Canada. Then I got worried right away.”

She said it was wrong of New York City not to let residents know what was going to happen the day before. The air quality, according to the scientist, was terrible, making the city the second most polluted in the world that day and leaving New Yorkers anxious.
