On Thursday (21) the Portuguese Parliament approved a new legal system that facilitates work visas for Brazilians. This procedure is valid for all nationals of CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries), which includes Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and others.

The government proposal Changes the rules for entry, stay, exit and expulsion of Brazilians from Portuguese territory. After the presidential sanction, it will be possible to obtain a visa valid for 120 days, which can be extended for another 60 days, until the immigrant is appointed.

If the person does not get a job within the specified period, he will be obliged to leave Portugal and will not be able to apply for a new visa until one year after the expiration date of the previous document.

The Portuguese government will do a criminal background check, and the Brazilian will need to prove that he can support himself during the time he is in the country and submit a return ticket.

The Portuguese government has also informed that a visa will be created for professionals working remotely in other countries, which will require proof of a minimum income earned outside Portugal.

The procedure also specifies that granting a residence permit and temporary resident visa to nationals of countries that are part of the CPLP is not based on a prior opinion of the SEF (Service of Aliens and Borders).

The project was proposed by Prime Minister Antonio Costa’s government, which has an absolute majority in Parliament, and was announced just over a month ago.

The speed of referral, in contrast to the usual, is likely to be related to the shortage of the workforce in Portugal and the significant increase in the elderly population in the country.
