(Reuters) – A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday that the shipment of the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer to Mexico this week includes doses made in the United States, the first of many doses exported from the United States.

The source says that the batch of vaccines, produced at Pfizer’s unit in Kalamazoo, Michigan, marks the first time the drug company has shipped overseas from a US headquarters after doses expired in late March under Trump.

The US government has come under pressure in recent weeks to provide surplus vaccines to other countries in need while making rapid progress in vaccinating their own people. Many virus-plagued countries are still struggling to obtain vaccines to help control the epidemic.

Pfizer has shipped more than 10 million doses to Mexico so far, becoming the largest supplier of Covid-19 vaccines to the country.
