Norway has not invested in the Amazon fund since 2018. “Let’s be honest. We have left some difficult years behind us, with Amazon Fund payments halted since 2018. Now, in recognition of the results of Brazil’s strong ambitions, I am very happy to announce that we will start again,” Eriksen said. .

The painting commemorated the Amazon Fund’s 15th anniversary. The initiative is jointly managed by BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) and the Ministry of the Environment.

Teresa Campello, Director of Social and Environmental Affairs at BNDES, said this contribution is a “show of confidence.” He added, “This declaration renews Norway’s commitments and is evidence of confidence that we, with Lula’s government, will resume the fight against deforestation, after four years in which the Amazon Fund was paralyzed.”

The Amazon Fund also received other donations

With Norway’s announcement, the total amount amounts to approximately R$1.1 billion. The Amazon Fund also received an additional contribution of R$215 million from the United Kingdom during the summit. This year, contributions were also announced from the European Union (R$110 million) and Denmark (R$105 million). In 2023, the Fund also received R$110 million from the German government, and signed a contract to contribute approximately R$500 million from the British government, in addition to R$30 million from the Swiss government and R$15 million from the United States. . .

The year 2023 witnessed the restructuring of the Amazon Fund and its operational and institutional structures. The decree establishing the Fund and defining its management has been reissued, COFA (the Steering Committee) has been reconstituted and the Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Deforestation in the Amazon Legal (PPCDAM) and its guidelines have been revised and the focus of the bilateral agreement applies to the bottom.
