Mary Quant, the British designer who revolutionized the fashion world by popularizing the miniskirt in the 1960s, died Thursday at the age of 93, her family announced.

Swing Sixties frontwoman Mary Quant died “peacefully” at her home in Surrey, southern England, her family said.

His family noted that he was “one of the most famous fashion designers of the 20th century and an exceptional innovator”.

Born on February 11, 1930 in London, in 1955 it opened its first store, “Bazaar”, in the Chelsea neighborhood, which was in full development at the time. The clothing and accessories store soon became a meeting place for young people and artists, attracting celebrities such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn.

Her style was easily recognizable with hairstylist Vidal Sassoon’s famous brown fringe.

Marie Quant was, above all, known for designs for very short dresses and skirts with simple lines and bright colors. But he is also famous for his “shorts” (“hot pants”), his plastic raincoats and his colorful makeup.

“My clothes fit perfectly with teen fashion, pop, bars […] and jazz clubs”, commented in his first autobiography “Quant by Quant”, published in 1965.
