A 23-year-old man has been detained for 60 days after coming into contact with two female flight attendants and flight attendants on a plane in the United States. The case occurred in July 2021 on a Frontier Airlines flight from Philadelphia to Miami.
Maxwell Perry pleaded guilty to the charges, and in addition to his two-month detention and one-year probation period, received a $15,000 fine. According to the American newspaper ABC News, he will have until August 2 to turn himself in.
The incident occurred after Perry ordered three drinks and the empty glass leaned on the back of the flight attendant, who asked him not to touch it. Maxwell spilled a drink on his shirt and went to the bathroom without a shirt. According to the arrest report, the boy walked around the cabin and touched the boxes of two flight attendants while trying to help him.
After the fight began, Berry had to be tied up with silver duct tape – a standard flying method to keep someone out of control.
Attorney Jason Kress claims that Maxwell is “a good man who committed a bad, unplanned act”. The perpetrator apologized and took full responsibility for the actions at trial yesterday, according to US TV WPLG.
The defense also says that due to the fallout from the case, the defendant is having difficulties finding a job. “Because of the massive media attention this case attracted, Max’s efforts to find a job using his undergraduate degree in financial economics were futile as he was constantly denied jobs without explanation.”
Judge Robert Scola Jr. made it clear to Perry that flight attendants do not feel unsafe at work because of events like this. Jordan Gallarza and Timira Burgess, two of the staff on board, said after the hearing that a 60-day prison sentence was not enough.
“My first role on any plane is to protect the passengers, including Maxwell Berry, and we got to Miami safely that day,” Gallarza was quoted as saying by the New York Post. “People on that plane saw more justice done than we did today. I think it’s a disgusting misstep of justice, in my opinion.”
