Through official notes and posts on Twitter, many governments and world leaders congratulated Luis Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) on his election to Brazil’s presidency on Sunday night (10/30).
The White House released two letters, one in English and one in Portuguese, on behalf of US President Joe Biden. The text emphasizes the relevance of the Brazilian electoral process: “Congratulations to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his election as the next President of Brazil after a free, fair and credible electoral process. I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the months and years to come.”
Alberto Fernandez, President of Argentina, posted two photos with Lula and a series of tweets celebrating the victory of the Workers’ Party and Brazilian democracy: “Congratulations, Lula! Your victory opens a new era for Latin American history. A time of hope and a future begins today. Here, you have a partner you work with and you dream big. For the good life of our peoples. After so many injustices I lived through, the people of Brazil elected you, and democracy triumphed.”
The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, also posted on Twitter a photo with Lula with the caption: “If not for victory, blessed people of Brazil. There will be equality and humanity.”
Chilean President Gabriel Borek shared a photo Lula posted – with his hand above the Brazilian flag – and wrote: “Lula. Allegria!”
Luis Ars, President of Bolivia, posted a photo of Lula in a motorcade with the caption: “Congratulations, Brother Lula, elected president of Brazil. Your victory strengthens democracy and integration in Latin America. The path to peace, progress and social justice.”
Even before the result was confirmed by the Supreme Electoral Court, during the counting, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, posted a brief salute to the elected president on Twitter: “Viva Lula.”
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also posted photos of Lula and a message: “We celebrate the victory of the Brazilian people, for whom on October 30 Lula elected their new president. Long live the peoples determined to be free, sovereign and independent! In the Brazilian democracy triumphed. Congratulations Lula! Big hug! !”
Uruguayan President Luis Lacal Pou wrote: “We salute the elected president of Brazil, Lula. We trust to work for a modern and open Mercosur. In the same way, we hope to continue and improve the very good bilateral relations.”
Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, like Gabriel Borek, shared a photo Lula posted earlier. Castillo posted a small text with the photo: “Peru congratulates the elected president of Brazil, comrade Lula, worker, trade unionist, fighter. His victory is essential for strengthening Latin American unity and social justice for the great nation.”
Guillermo Laso, President of Ecuador, also posted a message on his Twitter account: “I congratulate Lula on his election as President of the Federative Republic of Brazil. In democracy, we will continue to strengthen friendship and cooperation between our two countries, for better days for our citizens. And our region continues to integrate into pluralism.”
The President of Paraguay, Marito Abdo, also congratulated PT, saying: “Congratulations to Lula as the newly elected President of the Federative Republic of Brazil and to the brotherly Brazilian people on this electoral process. We hope that we will continue to work together for the prosperity of our country and peoples.”
From Portugal, Prime Minister Antonio Costa wrote: “I have already had the opportunity to warmly congratulate Lula on his election as President of the Republic of Brazil. But also on major global issues.”
Emmanuel Macron, President of France, posted on Twitter messages of congratulations to Lula, one written in French and one in Portuguese: “Congratulations, dear Lula, on your election, which begins a new chapter in the history of Brazil. For facing many common challenges and renewing the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”
Acting UK Ambassador to Brazil Melanie Hopkins praised the conduct of the electoral process by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) in a series of tweets: “On this very important day for Brazilian democracy, we recognize the important role of institutions, in particular of the Turkish Electoral Tribunal in conducting the electoral process. Fast, transparent and efficient.
“I congratulate Lula on confirming his victory as the next president of Brazil. The new president and the people of Brazil can count on the United Kingdom in this new chapter,” Hopkins continued.
The Chinese Embassy in Brazil announced that it had “become aware of the election results issued by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal”: “We extend our warmest congratulations to President-elect Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Vice-President-elect Geraldo Jose Rodriguez Alcumin Filho. We wish you further success in the development of Brazil.”
