A life-size marble statue of the Greek hero Hercules was discovered Thursday (26) in Barco Scotus, a green area that is part of the Archaeological Park of Appia Antica in Rome.

“Today, after weeks of landfill movements completely devoid of archaeological finds, Barco Scott has presented us with a big surprise: a life-size marble statue that, due to the lion’s skin covering his head, we can certainly identify with. A figure dressed as Hercules,” the park wrote on its page. official on Facebook.

According to the publication, the statue was found in the Parco Scot area, between Cristoforo Colombo and Via Appia Antica, where work was carried out on a construction site for several months to restore the sewer pipe.

The structure, which dates back to the last century, collapsed at several points, which also caused dangerous fissures to open in the garden and landslides on the hill.

To solve the problem that caused the prolonged closure of a part of the recreational space, renovations began that caused the movement of a large amount of land. The works will make it necessary, later, to undertake the restoration of the hill and the planting of new trees.

The excavations, which reached a minimum height of 20 meters below the level of the walking surface, were monitored by an archaeologist, coordinated by the staff of the Archaeological Park of Ápio Antigo. “Thanks to the archaeologist Federica Acerno, who accompanied the excavations,” the text concluded.
