Climate activists sprayed orange and yellow paint on the pillars of Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate on Sunday (17), to push for a halt to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

Berlin police said that demonstrators tried to use a hydraulic elevator to climb the monument. They were stopped and 14 demonstrators were arrested immediately.

The Last Generation, a group based in Germany, had already staged a controversial protest when demonstrators set up hundreds of roadblocks by attaching themselves to the asphalt.

The group’s action sparked police repression by the German federal states.

The movement published a statement about the protest in ink on the social networking site X, formerly known as Twitter.

“We will not stop our protest unless the axis is initiated. We have to give up oil, natural gas and coal by 2030 at the latest.

Germany aims to reach net zero emissions by 2045, but has not achieved annual targets over the past two years.
