The Democrat and Republican won their parties' caucuses in New Hampshire

President of the United States and pre-reelection candidate Joe Biden said “be clear” That Donald Trump will be the candidate nominated by the Republican Party in the race for the White House.

These statements came in a statement issued after the results of the primary elections in New Hampshire, which were held on Tuesday (January 23, 2024). The information is from The New York Times.

“My message to the country is that the stakes couldn't be higher. Our democracy. Our personal freedoms, from the right to choose to the right to vote. Our economy, which has seen the strongest recovery in the world since Covid. It's all at stake.”The Democrat said of Trump's nomination.

The Republican received the most votes in the party's primary. Biden also won the Democratic primary in New Hampshire, but the president's victory was considered symbolic because his name did not appear on the ballot. However, the North American state allows voters to write the candidate's name on the ballot.

“I want to thank everyone who wrote my name tonight [23.jan] In New Hampshire. It was a historic demonstration of commitment to our democratic process.Biden said in the statement.

The incident occurred because Biden did not register for the race after the US state refused to give up its seat to South Carolina. In the previous elections, New Hampshire was the first state to hold the Democratic Party primaries, but the party’s National Committee agreed to that. In April 2023, a new calendar was established that made South Carolina the top state.

Despite this, New Hampshire Democrats ignored the change and held caucuses on Tuesday (Jan. 23). Delegates were not distributed among the pre-candidates. The Democratic primary is scheduled to officially begin in South Carolina on February 3.

    Understanding the US elections

In the United States, before official elections, states hold electoral canvasses –Primary elections or gathering. The goal is to choose from among the parties' primary candidates the person who will represent the party in the elections scheduled for November 5.

In caucuses, each state holds its own primaries with its own rules. There are 2 models. Traditional, with voting on ballots, which can be open, closed or free. With affiliates only or not. A caucus is a party meeting. Voters gather somewhere to decide who the candidate will be.

In the United States, the winner of the election is not the candidate who receives the most popular votes, but rather the candidate who wins the majority of delegates in each state. It is distributed to the candidate with the largest number of votes. In previews the logic is different. Delegates vote in proportion to the number of votes.

The main caucus date will be March 5, when voters from 16 states and one territory will vote. History is known as Super Tuesday (Super Tuesday, in free translation). The territories of Guam and the Virgin Islands will end previews on June 8.

    Voting is not mandatory

In the United States, no one is required by law to vote in any local, state, or presidential election. According to the Constitution, voting is a right, but it is not a requirement.

    Electoral college

The President and Vice President of the United States are elected indirectly by the Electoral College. Each state has the same number of delegates as the number of seats in Congress (House of Representatives and Senate). There are 538 delegates.

After voting for president, votes are counted at the state level. In 48 states and Washington, D.C., the winner receives all of that state's electoral votes. Maine and Nebraska appoint their electors using the proportional system.

A candidate needs the votes of at least 270 delegates – more than half of the total number – to win the presidential election.

Typically, the projected winner is announced on election night in November. However, the official Electoral College vote takes place in mid-December when delegates meet.

The results will be announced on January 6, 2025. The opening will take place on January 20.
