Ministry of Health Argentina Bidding opened for 10,000 polished wooden bars for use in health campaigns and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. However, the purchase drew a lot of criticism in the country because it was made at the time of the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The items, which also include condom boxes and dispensers, have been approved for an estimated total value of 13 million pesos, or about 690,000 Brazilian reals. According to the Argentine newspaper “La Nacion”, three bidders submitted to deliver the wooden items.

Of the total, two respondents indicated that the products were imported and one was produced locally. Offers range from 498 pesos (R$26.49) to 1,430 pesos (R$76.08) per unit, in the case of imported products, and in the middle national production, which will cost 882 pesos (R$92)

The Argentine Government’s Minister for Health Care, Sandra Marcela Tirado, indicated, through a resolution dated June 24, that the procurement of supplies “will ensure the wide availability of promotional materials aimed at raising awareness and preventing the spread of diseases.”

Purchase details appear on the Argentine Public Procurement Portal. According to the data, this involves the acquisition of 10,000 propylene cans of turquoise color; 10,000 condom dispensers; and 10,000 units of polished wooden dildos.

In response to a question by La Nacion, the Ministry of Health said that based on “preliminary studies revealing the deterioration of indicators related to sexually transmitted diseases during the epidemic”, the file decided to open the process of obtaining the varieties.
