Should there be a maximum age for a president to take office? 76% of American respondents to the Economist/YouGov poll said yes, indicating Americans’ growing concern about the age range of potential candidates in next year’s election. President Joe Biden (80 years old) is seeking re-election and former President Donald Trump (77 years old) is the preferred Republican candidate to run for office.

Other polls, in the same proportion, reveal ageism among voters and suggest that both candidates will have ageism as an active opponent in the conflict. The issue of being too old to hold a public role comes to the fore whenever an embarrassing incident involving a politician occurs.

Biden tripped over a sandbag and fell to the ground during a military graduation ceremony and replaced Ukraine with Iraq in a statement. Recently, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell (81 years old) twice commented in front of reporters, and was unable to answer what they asked him. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, began reading the letter at the time of the vote, and all she had to do was answer yes or no.

The current Congress has the largest age group. If the minimum age were 70, as claimed by the majority of interviewees in successive opinion polls on the subject, 71% of senators, for example, would simply not be able to hold this position.

Biden was elected as the oldest US president. If he wins a second term, he will be 86 years old when he leaves the presidency. He knows he is the target of prejudice and fights back with experience. “I have gained a lot of wisdom and know more than most people. I am more experienced than anyone who has ever run for this office, and I feel proud and effective.”

The incumbent president is often the target of discrimination from his biggest rival: He is only three years younger, and Trump often mocks him for his age, cognitive decline, or any mistake he makes.

To run for President of the United States, a candidate must be at least 35 years old, but the Constitution written in 1789 sets no upper age limit. Violating this principle conflicts with another principle: the prohibition of age discrimination in the workplace, which has been implemented in the country since 1967.

Setting an age limit for holding public office requires amending the Constitution, which itself is a complex process: approval by two-thirds of the House of Representatives and two-thirds of the Senate, and ratification by three-quarters of the US House of Representatives. States. But judging by the polls, voters are not afraid to express bias.
