The British newspaper The Sun reported that Roman Abramovich, the owner of Russian club Chelsea, was denied entry to the United Kingdom. The publication stated that the businessman is accused of having ties with the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who began the attacks on Ukraine on Thursday (24). Abramovich, who arrived in London in 2003, denies any connection to the Russian government.

Recently, the owner of Chelsea FC entered England with an Israeli passport, according to European media. Abramovich’s choice of an Israeli passport began in 2018, when he was in the process of applying for an investor visa, until a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned in Salisbury, England. This incident raised tension between the United Kingdom and Russia.

During the period of instability between Russia and Ukraine, Abramovich’s name appeared among the 35 oligarchs identified as a major supporter of Vladimir Putin. Alexei Navalny, the leader of the Russian opposition released the list. When his name was published, Abramovich denied any connection to Putin. Also featured on the list was Alisher Usmanov, an Arsenal investor.

In the face of this revelation, the British Parliament supported the imposition of sanctions on Abramovich and Usmanov and the ban on their entry into the territory of the country. Liz Truss, UK Foreign Secretary, explained the situation surrounding Parliament at the moment.

We have a long list of accomplices in the actions of the Russian leader. If Russia refuses to withdraw its forces, we will have to increase the pressure and attack more banks, elites, and big companies. Liz Truss said the intent was to damage Putin and undermine the Russian economic system over time, targeting Putin’s cronies.

Since the ban by the British Parliament, Abramovich has not attempted to enter the UK, despite having ties to Chelsea, as well as a mansion and company in England. He made most of his fortune buying and selling public assets of the Soviet Union when it was dissolved.
