A Californian Mexican food chain has been ordered to pay $70,000 in compensation to 35 employees for hiring a fake priest to obtain their confessions. according to New York PostAllegations indicate that the farce was intended to induce Taqueria Garibaldi workers to reveal the sins they had committed against the store.

In court, an employee said that the fake priest asked if they stole something from their employer, were late for work, did something to harm the company, or had bad intentions. Network officials added that the situation is among the worst they have ever seen.

One victim of the scam said, “Once the confession started, I found the conversation strange and different from normal confessions, as I was going to tell the priest about the sins I wanted to confess.” She added that the alleged priest was only interested in hearing about sins being committed in the workplace.

The hoax was exposed during an investigation by the US Department of Labor into the employees’ unpaid wages. They found that Taqueria Garibaldi denied employees overtime pay, which violates US labor law. The authorities also allege that the owners of the establishment threatened the employees for cooperating in the investigations.

In addition to the $70,000 (R$334,000) in compensation, the Foundation must pay another $70,000 in back wages to the employees. The site owners will still have to pay US$5,000 (R$24,000) in civil penalties.
