A new report from the UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM) has shown that Britain has a strong digital economy. The company claims that internet access is more widespread than it has ever been - and this will undoubtedly be having an impact on website optimisation strategies.

If you look at the strengths of search engine marketing - such as its excellent return-on-investment and accountability - and the fact that digital advertising spend is starting to edge ahead of traditional marketing channels, it is clear that Digital Britain is not far away.

UKOM claims that Britain's internet audience grew by five per cent during the past year, rising from 36.9 million users in May 2009 to 38.8 million in May 2010.

James Smythe, UKOM general manager, said: "Getting connected to internet at home has become easier, and it has become a part of more people's working lives too.

"Speed of connection must also be a factor - widespread access to decent broadband speeds means that the internet is getting better at making people's lives easier."

He added: "All age groups in the population are able to get online more easily now with less need to be technically competent, and they are clearly finding the content to keep them there."

His final comments highlight the universality of content created for website optimisation purposes. Marketing professionals are no longer solely engaging young, IT literate computer users with their search engine marketing campaigns.

UKOM's research showed that of the 1.9 million new internet users logging on in the past year, 53 per cent were over the age of 50.

So, every SEO Company should start looking very closely at who is in their clients' target audience because it may have changed considerably in the past few years.

The way in which people are accessing search engine optimised content is also changing. According to industry analyst Frost & Sullivan, the smartphone market is currently very fragmented, however this is likely to change within the next five years as the technology develops.
