Search Engine Optimisation News
Twitter is the new kid on the block when it comes to social networking. But with a number of high-profile celebrity Tweeters accruing mass followings on the micro-blogging site, its popularity shows no sign of waning. And the site's huge user base should make the ears of every SEO agency prick up. Search engine marketing has long been a consideration for firms with a social media aspect to their marketing campaigns, but the benefits of search engine optimisation on the platform have been uncertain - up until now.
According to Twitter's founder Biz Stone, the site delivers a whopping 800 million search results every single day - and that figure appears to be growing. Last month Twitter registered more than 24 billion searches, which means producing Tweets with the same search engine marketing tactics that are used for blogs and other social media websites is a must.
The growth in the number of searchers being made on the Twitter website stands at about 33 per cent. And surprisingly, the huge number of people looking for Tweets outstrips the number of searches carried out by Google rival Bing - which served up just 4.1 billion search engine results pages last month.
Search engine marketing expert and writer for IT Pro Martin James said: "If Twitter was a conventional search engine, it would be comfortably the leading alternative to Google."
"Twitter's rapid growth as a search outlet illustrates the growing desire for real-time information on just-popular topics – a desire traditional search engines have been moving fast to respond to," he added.
Search engine marketing is continually evolving and the latest developments don't always offer concrete benefits to individual campaigns. But the sheer volume of people searching for Tweets on Twitter means that optimising content for your target audience is essential. In other words, social media search engine marketing should be a key element of every businesses online strategy.
