Natural search engine marketing preferred to pay-per-click

Natural search engine optimisation techniques are more acceptable to British web users than their pay-per-click equivalents.

According to new research conducted by YouGov, UK surfers prefer natural search results as they deem them to be more trustworthy.

The startling discovery, outlined in the Search Attitudes survey, means that businesses selling products online should be striving to use natural search engine marketing techniques to promote their wares.

And with the reputation of pay-per-click lagging some way behind natural search engine results, it might be time for every business - or at least their SEO agency - to reassess the focus of their website optimisation strategies.

What's more, the survey also discovered that more than half of 18-24-year-olds use live search functions on social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook, showing the growing importance of ensuring Tweets and wall postings are search engine optimised.

Tamar search director Neil Jackson, who commissioned the YouGov research, said: "Consumers have matured in the past four years in their relationship with search and the one constant progression that the Search Attitudes Report series clearly identifies is the growth in awareness of the differences between natural and paid search."

As an example of the changing world of search engine optimisation, there are more than 800 million search results served-up every day on Twitter's website, according to the company's founder Biz Stone. This amounts to more than 24 billion real-time searches a month.

But Google is not sitting on its laurels when it comes to real-time search. So it won't be long before search engine results are even more contempraneous, and relevant than what can be offered through pay-per-click marketing.

The firm's Amit Singhal claims that Google's natural search algorithms can uncover events and online posts in as little as 90 seconds.

So as search engines get more sophisticated and swift at returning content, focusing on natural search engine marketing becomes increasingly important - if only to ensure that your marketing strategy changes from moment to moment.
